From DIYer-
Instructions for Modine HC86 horizontal unit heater running hot water say to use balancing valve in return. Any suggestions on a preferred valve?

Thanks much.

How many gpm do you need to supply.

What are you balancing it with? It is on its own zone, right? Choose the cv of the zone valve to get the flow you need (or circulator if you're zoning by circulator).

The spec on the unit heater is 4.6 gpm.
The Cv of the zone valve is 10.3, (3/4" pipe) "at max 4 ft/sec recommended flow rate".
Yes, it is on its own zone.

I'll check the balancing valve specs to see what matches up with the above unless one of you can recommend one off-hand based on this.

    Thanks again.

B & G circuit setter is one way to go. But even if you install a balancing valve if you don't have the tools to measure the flow it doesn't do much good unless you install a flow meter. And circuit setter and flow meters are pricy

For a garage heater I would install a ball valve. Throttle the valve until you get 18-20 degree F difference between supply and return with the fan running of course.
