No Heat

This morning I got up and my heat was not running. Outside temp was 30 degrees. I had the heat on my thermostat set to kick heat on at 61 degrees. This is an Amana dual zone ac/gas heat pump.3 years old. The thermostat shows as on but no air blowing. Several hours later I tried turning it on again and air began to blow but the outside fan isn't turning. I turned it off in fear this will create additional problems. Put in a service call but it will be 3 days before they can come. What could be wrong? The gas is on. I am heating with my gas fireplace to suffice.

in the past has the system automatically switched from electric (heat pump) to gas? Your thermostat may have a setting or option sometimes called "emergency heat" or "backup heat" that will tell your furnace to stop using the heat pump and switch to gas. If you stat has this option it may get you heat until the service techs are available to see what the problem is, you may have to select this option on both zone thermostats depending on what type of controls you have. 30 is pretty low for most (but not all) heat pump systems

Can you post a picture of the thermostat? and do you know the model numbers of the gas furnace, heat pump and what zone controller the thermostats are connected to. I will help in finding the source of the problem.
No heat could be Heat pump not working
    Gas furnace not working
    Zone control not working
and each of those problems have sub-problems to look at like if the gas furnace is not working, it could be the ignitor or the inducer motor or the pressure switch or the flame sensor of a dozen other faults.

Model numbers and pictures are helpful.

and before you go crazy... Is the switch turned on?

The switch is in the attic. The unit came on later in the day when I tried it again. But the fan isn't turning outside.

According the the model number of your outdoor unit, the ASX models are cooling only outdoor units. That would mean that the Gas heater is the only heating appliance connected to your ductwork.

Knowing that, the outdoor fan will not operate in HEAT mode.
Also the thermostat in your picture is not a heat pump thermostat. That thermostat is made for a gas heater with a central air conditioner.

If you are getting heat from the ductwork, then your gas furnace is probably fine.

If you have NO HEAT, then there may be a switch off in the attic (or wherever the Gas furnace is) or there is a failure in the parts of the Gas Furnace. With the information provided up 'til now, I can't help you.

Everything looked fine in the attic and the heat is currently working a day later. Switched the attic switch that powered the thermostat  off and back on. Not sure that woukd have had any effect. I'm unsure if it was a fluke or if I should still pay someone to come out. Is there something that would cause intermittent problems with gas furnace?
