I loved my dad and miss him.

He was born in Berlin in 1900 and ran away from home when he was 17 to fight in WW1 for the Germans. Fled the Nazis in 1936 and was in London in 1942 when the war broke out and was sent to an internment camp in Australia where he volunteered for the British infantry. They made him change his name from Furstenberg to Forbes.

    Happy Father's Day everyone!

Freshwater Drum and Channel catfish and were most common in canals. Although my Dad never liked the Drum, I think most people at the time thought they were trash (invasive) fish.

He fished White and Small mouth bass along with Walleye at Lake McConaughy reservoir as well.

My late father at his confirmation. A postcard found when cleaning out the house after losing my mother. He was born in 1912 and looks about the typical age of eight or so for that event after 1914. I spent the better part of a week working on the scanned file to clean up cracks and scratches.

An afterthought sparked by the fishing talk. If I ever complained about being cold during winter in the NYC area while growing up, he'd say: "Cold? You want to feel cold? I'll take you fishing for cod off Montauk in January!" That was something he'd done in the past, but I never took him up on his "offer." :)

@Mad Dog_2 Nebraska. And yes, we did a lot of bow fishing of carp from a fiberglass canoe dad built in the garage. Big and heavy, but very stable for bow fishing. Dad got an aluminum canoe a few years later. Standing up in that canoe was like balancing in on a wet log!
Dad was 85 years old when he passed away in 2019, we all miss him. Thanks for bringing up all these great memories!

Handsome young man..about my Grandfather Norb's age.  What part of the city you grow up in, Sal?  Yep..Cod fishing 🎣 is always in January & February and like, Duck Hunting, is best in nasty weather!  Didn't go all the way to The End (Montauk) today, but had brunch in Shelter Island...Great 👍 day!   Mad Dog 🐕

Thank you. He was 41 when I was born, and it's remarkable how little his face changed later in life.

First ten years in the Bronx, then Yonkers until getting married, followed by three years in New Rochelle before flying the coop all the way to southern California.
