Flame sensor build up

I have had two service call outs in the last week where I notice that on the flame sensor there is a white build up almost covering the entire sensor. Both Natural gas. It looks like teflon at first but w/ some sand paper I am able to scrape off the build up. It not a light coating. Im used to seeing some sooting but not this....
Any ideas why?

No unusual chemical in the area like a laundry? Not likely on two different jobs.

No chemicals in the basements. the 1st basement has nothing in it...not even storage. Second is partially finished but nothing down there that would hint of chemicals.

One is a New yorker CGS steam boiler. The other a Bradford white Atmospheric Gas water heater. Two different towns. The buildup was causing the pilot to go out on the water heater. The boiler, not allowing the main burner to be pulled in because it could not sense the pilot flame had been proven.
