Boiler Temp

About a week ago, the furnace had to be relit in my home as the oil tank went empty. I noticed after the tech left, the t&p valve on my water heater was leaking significantly. I replaced the valve, but the leak was still happening. That’s when I noticed the temp was turned up to 220 degrees on the boiler. I turned it down to 160, but at this point the water had been essentially boiling in there for a few days. I’m now noticing that the valve will still leak and the boiler is heating over what the temp is set to. Could the prolonged overheating have messed with the boilers ability to gauge temperature?

The short answer is no, or not likely.
Is there a way for you to accurately measure temperature and pressure of the boiler and domestic hot?

It sounds like your boiler high limit is faulty or gunked up with sludge. Clean or replace

@HVACNUT we have the temperature and pressure gauge. The pressure currently reads 10psi, and the temp is going up to over the high limit we set. It kicks on when it shouldn’t.

Often times after an old relief valve goes off, they do not reseal, may want to replace that valve.

Are there two settings, operating and high limit?

With 10 psi I don’t think it is boiling? It would need to be up around 240F.
Maybe percolation sounds from sludge and mineral build up?

Those aquastats aren’t known for being highly accurate, and the same with the gauge.
The only thing you can do is confirm the temp and pressure. If that’s good, then the aquastat is ok. If not, replace the aquastat with an upgraded electronic one like a Hydrolevel 3250. Change the well and get LWCO. too.
If your pressure gauge is correct and your relief valve is still dripping, you can try gently and firmly tapping on the stem try to to reseat it. But you’re better off draining the boiler and replacing it.
You’re hi limit is on 160. What’s the lo limit? Manufacturer recommends a minimum of a 20 degree difference.
