One pipe ,Top feed or over head oil line I would instal a tiger loop . Top feeds rely on a siphon . In a perfect world it works . The only way I Now to remove all the air is a high volume hand push -pull pump , all oll guys would have . Hopefully the installer added a ball valve before the fireomatic valve so you don't have a spill. OK its a perfect world with no air leak or air .What happens when the oil driver is filling up the tank and the burner turns on. He will pump 100-200 mph a minute of fuel oil . I would install a tiger loop job done, let it do its job .

Top feeds , sending the tubing into the tank should be installed with a iron sleeve , Copper alone would bend out with a delivery . Set the sleeve shorter then the tubing or cut or drill in a vent .

There was an error rendering this rich post.

Thanks. If I had a qualified licensed, insured competent tech out here when it was installed or supposedly maintained I wouldn't have the problem I have.

@EdTheHeaterMan, whatever it takes. I'll leave extra line and try to hand bend it first. I heard about using a coffee can before for bending expansion loops, so that should be enough of a bend I would think.

A tubing bender is not a bad idea though. Wrapping a spring around the tubing to keep it from kinking works well also.

After you make that expensive repair and you still have the same problem, What will you check next?

@PNJ what did you end up doing, and how did it go? Top-feed? What bushing did you use? Did you install a rigid sleeve for the supply line inside the tank (if so, how’d you do it)? What fittings/devices and where? Did you by any chance use an anti-siphon valve/OSV? De-aerator/Tigerloop?

I’m asking alll this cuz I’m looking to convert from two- to one-pipe and upgrade the whole supply line in the process (top-feed, above ground, bottom feed’s not an option). Any details, insights, difficulties, anecdotes would be appreciated!

you can use a two pipe tank bushing and just plug the unused threaded return connection

@seized123 I didn't change the tank until this past November, but everything went well thanks to the help from everyone here, especially @EdTheHeaterMan. Can't thank him enough. I installed the tank outside using a double tap bushing with one end plugged, continuous (top-fed) coated copper Type L tubing with a new Firematic valve and added an expansion loop. My system was already single-line. I didn't add anything else, just replaced what was already there.

    Everything has been working fine.

Either a 2"x3/8" bushing or a 2"x3/8" Duplex fitting and plug the hole you dont use or make a 2nd pickup line and plug it. Don't be afraid to get your line down to 2" from the bottom and install a tigerloop at the burner.
