I went to a new customer 8 year old steam boiler, was put together with minimum piping (tomorrow I will take pic of the piping) was called for t stat not working but I went in boiler room, only one main vent on one of the two risers, auto feed was at 230 gallons. ( I reset it) in3 hours used about 12 gallons but it took about an hour to get pipes hot and lots of soot on the burners. What causes a boiler to leak prematurely?

Mostly excessive water use. Look for leaking vents, packing nuts etc.All Steamed Up, Inc.

Your right I never looked in any of the rooms I was staying in the boiler room.
Would it make sense to put 2 main vents on both sides of the return ?0
