Does anyone know if it is code to use Pex or Poly instead of copper for boiler heating systems in Northern IL / Chicago suburbs? Does anyone have a strong opinion or feedback on using either?

Near boiler piping will always hold up better with iron or copper piping. Branches to radiators, baseboards or radiant floor heat can be PEX with an oxygen barrier. Any other Poly pipe would be a mistake.

After you make that expensive repair and you still have the same problem, What will you check next?

I think the issue is if it is allowed by the code in that area since Chicago at least historically has been known for not allowing some more modern materials.0
