Unusual Vintage Hydronic Radiator Set-Up

A contractor in CO called me about the attached photo. As soon as I saw it, I remembered a discussion here about this type of system. Any one recall? Greatly appreciated!

    @New England SteamWorks , that's definitely a unique setup- it's actually called the "Unique" valve, attributed to Honeywell but it appears in a bunch of heating catalogs from that time.

    I have seen pictures of these before and always wondered if they would work in CI, single pipe only rad,
    that is with no top cross connection. Maybe on one that had just a few sections.....maybe taller is better?

    Nope. The water could not circulate across the top, and the air could not escape.

    My friends in Detroit have a house with those. Danfoss and a few others make a valve with a lance that can replace it.
