    Even better to just unscrew them. I try not to destroy hardware unless it's absolutely necessary.

    Total noob here. Just wanted to say this thread helped me a lot in adding a skim port. I ended up loosening up the 1 1/2" square plug from my boiler by using an electric impact wrench and a 12 point 34mm impact socket from Amazon. Tried 32mm but the socket was unable to go in all the way. Was able to take it off pretty easily and each corner was marred just a little bit by the impact. Found a lot of gunk behind the plug when I pulled it out.
