a customer showed me his copper heat exchangers in his large storage tank used with his wood boiler and asked if this is bad for the pipe and what he should do about. Any ideas?

Hi, Is the white coating scale from hardness in the tank water? If so, Reducing the hardness while keeping pH in the right place would be a good start. Is the heat exchanger big enough for the heat it's trying to move? If not, scaling is more likely. Is new make-up water coming into that tank? Questions! :p

is he is he adding fresh water to that tank occasionally? If so you will continue to add minerals that will attach to that copper tube hx. The scaling happens quickly if the boiler is running 180 and higher as wood boilers tend to do
