hello - we have a furance that was installed new in 2001, the Utica model number 5FH-4150. We’d like to know if the unit was built with any asbestos in it. I was wondering if by 2001 there were regulations banning the use of asbestos in residential units. thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

    Nope. They have fiberglass insulation.

Is there an issue with this boiler?

thanks, for the quick response Steamhead. I’ve seen fiberglass between the cast iron and the sheet metal housing. Is the material in the combustion chamber fiberglass, too? really appreciate it.

    It's Kaowool, not asbestos.

while we’re on the subject of insulation materials, any idea what this spongee stuff is? it is a very old patch - maybe from the 50’s?

That may very well be asbestos. Wet it down a little and take a sample to some place that does removal and they will tell you for sure.

Depends when they patched it. Pre 1980ish it could be asbestos
