I was in an old home last week and saw one of these fittings on one of the hydronic returns. I’ve never seen on before (that I’m aware of). I couldn’t figure out what it is. Any ideas?

It's an old safety valve. The plug in the bottom was where the discharge pipe was connected. I can't see the writing on it, but it doesn't look like a Thrush................All Steamed Up, Inc.
