    Years ago landlords use to install lock boxes on the thermostat .. Tenants put a bag of ice on the box to get more heat . Nothing changes :)

    If landlords have a $7 MV thermostat like that on the wall, they don't care about your temp setting unless they're passing through daily to check it. If the latter is the case, they're going to be even less thrilled with your silly invention and you're going to be looking for housing.

    Or you could just go to a supply house or good hardware store and buy the key since it isn't like they are keyed differently. or reach in with a pocket knife through the slots and turn the dial like i do.

    Oh, and i guarantee whatever maintenance person that installed that thermostat didn't understand how to properly set the anticipator so adjusting the antcipator properly would be the proper fix.
