On closing glass gauge lower valve slight leak at nut when attempting blow-down gauge, which stopped on opening. Can or should they be repacked?

Repacked? It depends on what type/brand of valve you have and how old it is. Some don't repack at all or that well. Because of this, most of the time when the valve is leaking I have elected to change it. That fixes the leak without question.
If this is a glass gasket on the gauge glass then you can change the washers.
For now, it sounds like you have back seated the valve stopping the leak.0 -

Tightened nut, seems to have worked. In future, will clean glass old fashioned way, remove and clean, which I've done in past.
