Hello,
Can I use either of the two inlet ports on a Suntek A2VA-7116 pump in my one-pipe hookup?

Yes. You could use the return port as well as long as there's no bypass plug

Sure, look at the flow schematic.

You can put the supply piping onto the return port, and it will work?

@Robert O'Brien is correct. As long as the bypass plug is not there the return opening is connected to the inlet by way of the bypass. That is the reason for the bypass port. It's to allow the gearset volume (less the oil going to the nozzle) to go back into the strainer/inlet chamber of the fuel pump.

So connecting the oil line from the tank in any of the three 1/4" ports will work.

I learned a lot about "fuel units" because we used to rebuild them at our shop back in the day. Replace gear sets, pressure regulators, and pump seals were second nature to me in the 1960s. in the '90s the mini pump was cheaper than a rebuilt J pump, so rebuilding pumps was not cost-effective anymore.

After you make that expensive repair and you still have the same problem, What will you check next?

Never knew, thanks to both of you. Of course they wouldn't dare put that in their manual, and I wouldn't blame them.
Now the bigger question, who's tried it, and why?

You never really know why anyone does anything, Steve. But picture an old 1940s oil burner with some crazy air adjustment handle in the way and the fuel line is coming up from the ground thru the cement (the way we did it back in the day) and the return opening on the J pump is the easiest opening to attach the fuel line to.

Just saying... I did it back then and I would do it again under the right circumstances.

Led Zeppelin's In Through The Out Door was a very underrated album IMO.

I never knew that oil pumps were their inspiration for that album. But now that I think about it, I do recall back in the late 1970s I would get a service call In the Evening and have to leave All My Loved ones before dinner to go on a South Bound Saurez. I felt like a Fool in the Rain getting ready because I'm Gonna Crawl into the room under the Carouselambra Restaurant where the broken boiler is. After I finished the repairs you will never guess what the cook prepared for me?

Sorry to change the subject, but does the pressure adjustment control the output regardless of which intake port is used?

The title of the other song on the album is Hot Dog. But I was going to say " No... a cheeseburger." if HVACNUT replied with that title.
