The Paul System and Other Delightful Discoveries

You never know what you’ll come across when you’re the heating person. It’s a wonderful life. In this episode, Dan Holohan tells about the time he was making recommendations on how to save fuel in a circa-1905 voraciously steam-heated building and discovered a Paul System, as well as a piece of American movie history.

Thank you. As always a pleasure. We are voyeurs at heart. As an HVAC guy for 55 years, I get to go where the radiators, registers, grilles, thermostats and equipment is located. Ain't it a great life. Thanks for sharing.

Got me into David Brinkley's house and into his library. And into John Riggins house as well. Riggin's MVP trophy from the superbowl was on the shelf above the washer and dryer with the laundry soap.

I remember being in Calvin Kleins offices in midtown. The Waldorf Astoria, the Plaza Hotel, and PLENTY of other places I would otherwise never be. It IS good being the heating (or cooling) guy.

Not too many people are skilled in two crafts. Dan H excels at heating solutions and at story telling. What a combination. We are the fortunate ones.

Seems you can still get Paul air vents- here's one source:

I bet that system would love you if you got the Paul lines working again.

Dan, you always have the best stories. I am not in the heating business. I used to be in the telecommunications business but became very interested in hydronics after the purchase of the 1928 home with hot water heat. I guess you could say hydronics and the telephone business are similar in many ways. It takes lots of planning and engineering to make both work properly. Communication lines are pipes, they just carry something other than heat. You know darn quick when something goes wrong with either.
