The Surprising Stories Behind Heating Inventions
Did you know that the first pressure relief valve was invented in 1681 because the King of England really liked jelly? And that the first gravity heating system was used to warm chickens? How about the expansion tank that was assembled using an overstock of baby carriage wheel rims? In this episode, Dan Holohan tells the fascinating stories behind inventions that paved the way for modern heating.

Hi, It sounds like the original relief valve was much like they used to use in river boats on the Mississippi.
Guess it's not a good idea to hold that long lever arm down, even if it means you lose a race!

great podcast! just wanted to mention that i work as a patent examiner for the US patent office. if you ever need help pulling any of the old patents or tracking down the origins or descriptions of the old inventions just lemme know and i'd be happy to see what i can do
(and now for requirement reasons i need to state that anything i do here is on my own time and i am not speaking on behalf of USPTO or representing them in any official capacity)0 -

Hmmm, I'm thinking that Mikolaj Stefanczyk must be related to @hot_rod , or at least is a kindred spirit

I third posting a readable version.
Most people can read at least twice as fast as they can listen. About 300 words per minute vs 150 wpm.

Think of the opportunity. Spread the gospel of Heating Help twice as fast!

Hi, I also read much faster than people usually talk, but Dan is such a good storyteller and he packs so much else into the telling, like chuckles, pauses at just the right times and well-placed emphasis, that to me it's worth taking the time to listen to how the story is being told. Those rich bits aren't going to show up in a transcript, so as long as my ears work, I'll make time to listen.
Yours, Larry
ps. It might be an interesting test to read the transcription, see how you feel. Then listen and see how you feel.1 -

I listen to them at 2x.
I had been mispronouncing Holohan in my head for about 15 years until I watched a youtube presentation a year or so ago. I had only read things that you wrote, i had never actually heard you speak.0 -
