Exhaust Backflow Preventer - Necessary?

For a condensing tankless which will be located indoors - wondering if these are in common usage? Takagi lists it as an "option" for cold climates. The recommended one is stainless steel (Z-Vent), which, while they conveniently fit directly on the exhaust vent collar on the Takagi, I suppose they can only mate with other SS vent products? Since most condensers seem to be vented with PVC, I'm having a hard time believing that people use these devices.
