Tripping Spill switch

Hi guys....

GLad to find a forum like this....

Heres my story...

12 year old New Yorker CS-G Series gas hot water boiler system...

I recently got a no heat from my boiler.....I figured out it was the spill switch tripping...

My plumber said that my community had issues like this in the past and they said it was a chimney problem.

So, with that said, I got my chimney cleaned and inspected yesterday...it past with no problems...

Now, in testing , the boiler again....I sat and watched things in action...

The call for heat began.....the damper opened....flames came on......hot water baseboards got hot....

Temp was hit at 86 degrees I set...the boiler shut off and damper closed.....

The switch DID NOT trip while the boiler was running ...the vent hood was quite cool to touch....

The switch tripper afterwards when the boiler stopped and the damper closed....the hood got much too hot to touch and tripped the switch....

Any suggestions?

Thxs

PS- I did buy a new spill switch , thinking it was faulty GSK ..something like that...

First I would get the boiler looked at by a pro to be sure it's okay. You may be able to move the vent damper up higher if it is connected directly to the boiler draft hood.

The burners may not be shutting off properly. Time for a pro- use the Find a Contractor page of this site.

There may also be an issue with the amount of time before the damper closes. If you have had a control replaced recently, there may be a setting for how long the delay is between the burner off and the damper close. If it is too short, that could be the problem. If the temperature rating of the spill switch is incorrect that can also be a problem.

More importantly, have the burner operation checked as mentioned above as @unclejohn and @Steamhead have suggested. If there are no issues there then check out the timing

After you make that expensive repair and you still have the same problem, What will you check next?

Does the boiler have a standing pilot burning all the time or does it have an electronic ignition? If its electronic a temporary solution may be to switch the damper to stay open until you can get a tech to troubleshoot the overheating problem.  Thats obviously not normal,  especially with a properly functioning chimney. Many possibilities could be causing that problem, you need a technician to determine the cause.
