Local Network (LAN) Thermostat

Hi. I've seen a couple posts about networked thermostats, but no definitive conclusion on what the best products might be. I want to be able to control my home thermostat remotely, without going through a cloud service. I have my own server, and could install software to communicate with the thermostat via my LAN (via VPN when offsite). So far I've found Network Thermostat, but their cheapest solution would run me $500. I'd really like to keep this under $200 if possible. Any ideas for similar LAN-based alternatives?

Assuming I don't want to blow $500 on a good LAN thermo, I'm curious to know what the prevailing opinions are on standard, cloud-based wifi thermostats? Who wins in that category for a single pipe steam system?

Thank you!

Jonathan

Seems like Radio Thermostat is another option. I think they used to be called Homewerks? They have units for less than $100, but get meh reviews on Amazon. Seems very unreliable. Their website contains no support phone number, which is a bad sign.
