I may be nuts, but I seem to recall someone saying that 1/2" copper pipe can be soldered inside that fitting to avoid the goofy flat threads and leak potential0

Try an EPDM gasket, those fiber washers can be tough to seal.
A water meter gasket, or hose washer may be the correct size
With fiber washers, both surfaces need to be flat and clean. Wet the washer before you put it together for best results. Or a thin coat of pipe dope.Bob "hot rod" Rohr
