Water off and Heater during Winter Vacation

My boiler feeds from the water heater. Can I turn off the water coming from the main after draining the whole house--except for the water heater---? I want to avoid frozen pipes when I am away. Or do you have any other suggestions. Thank you.

    Hot water or steam boiler?
Do you know if you have a low water cut off control?

It is a steam boiler. The water fills automatically when the water is low. What is the low water cut off control? Thank you

I assume you want the heat to work when you're away.

How much water is added to the system in a week? A month?
If the water is shut off to the boiler, and a low water condition occurs, the boiler will shut off, so no heat.
For a steamer, I'd leave the water on. Depending on the type of system (pics would help) you can wire up the alarm contacts to notify you if the boiler locks out. Or you can install a wifi thermostat which will notify you if the house isn't maintaining heat. And you can have someone meet a service tech at your house long before you'd have to worry about a freeze up.

There was an error rendering this rich post.
