sometimes when the thermostat calls for heat the furnace turns on and gives heat. Randomly a call for heat will put us in to hard lockout? Any ideas to troubleshoot this?

It’s very important to note when your primary control locks out the burner it’s because it detected an unsafe condition or flame failure. You should never press the reset button as it has NEVER fixed the problem. It can only make it worse and/or dangerous. Only the tech should reset the burner.
Could be a dozen things, all easily checkable by a qualified tech.
Only thing you could do is turn off the system, replace the batteries in the thermostat, turn system back on, in the event the thermostat is causing a rapid on/off situation. There was an error rendering this rich post.

If your control has the LCD Display, By pressing the ^ button you will scroll thru the last 10 Error codes. This is for technician trouble shooting, but information only. It may give you an indication of what is happening, and let the HVAC tech know that they should send a tech that understands Oil Heat trouble shooting. Not all HVAC techs are created equal!

After you make that expensive repair and you still have the same problem, What will you check next?
