402 tekmar

Ok so I am a retired electrician and trying to get some answers on adding the 4 way valve on a non condensing boiler with a tekmar 402 control. I can't get an answer to three questions.
I want to add a 4 way valve to minimize thermal shock to the boiler, where do I install it in a hydronic oil fired boiler systems . Would a 3-Way Thermic Valve work or not with tekmar 402 control?
How would I configure the control to work with either one?
I have a weil-mclean boiler with a tankless coil I would like to use that to heat a 40 gal tank, there is no explanation or diagrams on how to do that.
Thank you

  • As far as the mixing valve control, I don't see a 4-way mixing valve in the 402 control, only 3-way. Try calling tekmar at (250) 545-7749.

As far as the tankless coil heating DHW, see if there is a tekmar control to do that as well.
    8.33 lbs./gal. x 60 min./hr. x 20°ΔT = 10,000 BTU's/hour

Former Wallie @icesailor was a big proponent of bronze circulator from coil to a storage tank, even provided a drawing or 2. Can't seem to find them.
Why not just a 3 way ESBE, or Caleffi mixing valve to protect the boiler, no wires needed?
I will tell you with years of experience with a Tekmar boiler control and an oil fired boiler with high temp, radiant heat, and an indirect, trying many different configurations and settings & piping arrangements, that control trying to protect your boiler using the sensors and the 'minimum' setting will cause severe constant short cycling on all but the coldest days.
Better to protect the boiler with the 3 way, leave minimum 'off'. And if you're still short cycling, then a buffer tank.

    Here's some ideas:

They do sell a 4 way valve. I bought the Actuating Motor 741 with a 3 way and it seems to work.
  • Yes, they sell the hardware, but I don't think the 402 is set up to control a 4-way since they only show a 3-way in their I & O instructions. See page 7.

You can protect the boiler with either a 4-way or 3-way; you just have to use the correct control.

If boiler protection is your only goal, the tekmar 360 controls both a 3-way and a 4-way without all the bells and whistles of a 402.

I haven't used a tekmar control in quite awhile, so I'm probably rusty. It's best to check it out with a rep. before purchasing.

    Hi Allen,
Thank you for your help. I have the 402 already installed. I can add the 360 into this setup?

Would an ESBE valve work without affecting the 402 system?
