Boiler needed reset, what causes this?

Hi guys. Noticed yesterday that I had no hot water. I got to the boiler and the temp is around 90F instead of between 160 and 180 F as it normally is. I press the reset button, and it fires up. Within 15 minutes it's hot again, and has been fine since. We moved in a month ago and this is the only time this has happened.

Thinking it was just a fluke, but wondering why it would have needed done? Has me a bit anxious - don't want it to happen on a week long trip this winter and we are out of heat and come back to frozen pipes and dead pets. Thanks for the help

What kind of boiler and system. If it is a mod com then I would clean the rectifier and ignition probes with wet and dry sandpaper.

Based on your pictures in your other post, your boiler has a lot of issues that need to be addressed by a competent professional.
If you have to press the reset button that means the burner shut off due to an unsafe condition. Pushing the button didn't fix the problem. Pushing it multiple times could cause a huge disaster.

For starters, you flue pipe is not installed correctly or by code. Can't have the barometric damper on the tee like that for oil.

Could be the reason why someone put a draft assist fan on it instead of first trying to fix the flue pipe. Also the flue pipe is the wrong gauge thickness.
Missing firomatic valves on the oil line.

There was an error rendering this rich post.
