Is connecting cast iron radiators by zone in series an okay practice?

    Depends on how you do it.
    Just straight series and the first ones get the hottest water and the last ones get the coolest.
    You could measure and modify your approach to calculate water temperatures and make the last one larger and the first one smaller to balance it out.
