Rinnai cycles randomly

We have a Rinnai tankless water heater that also is our heating system. Why does it run in the middle of the night when heaters are off, everyone is sleeping and there is no demand? It doesn't run at any set time. Is this normal? The unit is in our guest bedroom closet and is annoying to our guests.

Does your model have a pre-heat, to prevent the cold water sandwich on the domestic hot water side? If so it is keeping itself warm for anticipation of you turning on a hot water faucet.
