Upgrading old model Carlin 60200FR Gas Control to new digital version?

I've been having issues diagnosing what's causing shut downs, and see that the newer version has a screen and error codes telling you what's making it unhappy and even stores fault history. Can I upgrade, and is it smart? For $85 it seems like a good plan! So far in 2 threads people have told me both it can't be the LWC, and that the LWC is often the culprit in mysterious shutdowns! I've now pulled and cleaned the LWC, but there's a good chance there's something else going on.
