Two-pipe steam

There is a closed valve attached to the large asbestos covered pipe in the ver back corner of my system. The top of the pipe has a blue steam vent. I have asked the furnace man several times if this valve should be opened and he said no. I wa wondering why you thought. Maybe my system would work better if it was opened. Photos will follow.

You are going to have to do a better job of showing us a picture of the large valve attached to the asbestos covered pipe. It is not obvious from the pictures you have posted, although other valves are shown. BTW, it looks like it's time to change and maybe add some main vents.

a Diagram might also work. What is missing is the context of what the valve connects
