Condensate tank piping?

Come across this piping arrangement for the condensate tank venting. I've never seen this before. Can anyone give a explanation, of what it is to do? Piped

Check valve in that dropped pipe. I believe they are using it for a vacuum breaker. They piped it that way so if the check valve leaks backwards the condensate will go into the condensate pump0
