The amount of metal surface area with water on 1 side and flame or flue gasses on the other side. This includes the combustion chamber if backed by water and all the tubes and flue passages with water on the other side.
Fire tube commercial boiler are usually rated at 5 square feet of heating surface/boiler horsepower. 1 boiler horsepower = evaporating 34.5 lbs of water from water at 212 deg to steam at 212 deg=33465 btu/hr if I remember right0
