I know guys doing that right now, @jim_r. You have to vent well and keep the pressure low. Works very well, as it did in the beginning.

And Water Seals ? Be interesting to see some forward thinking people wonder " So simple , a tube with a bend and airhole , a metal ball , and perhaps a mechanical screw to adjust it ? Probably most parts already available.. Makes you wonder if there's a untapped market out there..?? Does make you wonder , doesn't it ?

    And Water Seals ? 😉

    Jim

Waterseals only hold back wisps of steam. They are not traps, and will trap nothing. Think about it. One ounce will push water 1-3/4'' high. How deep is the water seal? more than an ounce or two and you'll blow thru the water seal like a fart in a bath tub. :)

Love the bathtub image, Gerry. 😂

The seals I’m taking about dip about six feet. They’re in old Manhattan buildings.

Well, if were talking water seal (traps) they don't really do much at all. They belong to a class of steam systems that controlled the radiator entry with high quality elaborate valves. Graduated. Some have built in orifices. That class of steam system typically had 10 to 20 % more radiator than needed added to ensure the steam condensed before pressing against the water seal. If your getting steam in the return your attention should be on the other end of the radiator.
