Slumlord calls our after hours tech and wants him to talk her hubby through lighting the pilot on a boiler we installed in a wreck of a double last year. Tech refuses and goes out. Finds pilot tubing virtually pulled out of the pilot burner and kinked. Pilot still sparks!!! But what puzzled us is the filth & ashes in this boiler. Our theory is someone tried to light it with a rolled up newspaper and left it in there.

The rust on metal areas is likely from humidity and from getting wet from broken pipes as they didn't bother to put a door on the shanty behind the double where the boiler sits before it got near zero out.

That's not remnants of newspaper, unless the Sunday NY Times was tossed in there weekly. (The failing NY Times for trump fans)

It looks like extremely poor combustion due to improper set up, insufficient combustion air, positive draft or chimney damage.

For a boiler that's only 1 year old, in order to save your reputation, it's on you to find the cause and cure.

Cute HVACNUT! Only thing I can think of is after some frozen pipes and a split in 1/2 air scoop last winter, they sealed the shanty the boiler sits in so well it couldn't burn. I would have thought a rollout switch might have tripped. Could be plugged flue too but there is a spill switch. Guess we have some investigating to do.
