Flex for last 3 feet of gas line

Hey all and happy heating season!

Quick question. In NY, Staten Island, is it permissible to use a flex gas line at the last 3 feet or so to a hot water heater? I’m replacing a friends HW and it would be good if I didn’t have to start threading black pipe.

Thanks!

Home Depot installers do it all the time. I'd rather use the black pipe. If you measure it out, it's usually only one or 2 threads to cut.

There was an error rendering this rich post.

Some places require flex line for earth quake reasons.

Mine is plumbed all in black iron, but I'm just a DIYer.

@STEVEusaPA Home Depot "installed" our washer and drier.
They hooked the hot and cold backwards, and no pipe dope on NPT connections for gas dryer...……. Nice eh? No one that works for them should be allowed anywhere near electrical or gas work.

Can you simply buy a coupling and a nipple and maybe an elbow, then a 12" or so appliance connector to the water heater? Looks more professional IMO than some long azz flex.....

@Solid_Fuel_Man that’s exactly what I’m doing. When I said 3 feet of flex gas, I was talking about an appliance connector.
