Any one know where I can find Lochinvar's guidelines for water quality in the Knight series boilers?

Try the first page of the "Start-up" chapter. That is where it is for KHN.

    200 ppm chlorine
    7 or 9 grains hardness

Thanks, Leon-Do they give any numbers on TDS, or PH?

No, just chlorine and less than 7 grains hardness is all that's listed

Here are a few different boiler manufacturers water specs.

To convert GPG grains per gallon to PPM multiply by 17.1

    So 7 gpg = 119 ppm

I'd suggest closer to 5 gpg on the hardness if possible.

Hardness, ph and TDS are fairly easy and inexpensive to test for at the job site.

You would want to send a sample to a lab for a more detailed breakdown as to what the TDS represents.
Stainless for example is sensitive to high chloride levels. You will see that warning label on all stainless indirects now.

SlantFin recently released a very detailed water quality spec for all their boilers. I'm not sure if it is online at their site.

Know too that softening water does not lower TDS and may increase it.

The Weil McLain manual says less than 7 gpg on one page and then no more than 7 grains on another. When I had our city water tested I was mainly interested in Chloride levels which turned out to be 14 ppm, well under the 200 ppm spec. I was surprised at the 7 grains hardness and 118 TDS. I'm hoping the use of Sentinel X100 inhibitor will take care the hard water.
