Sizing your hot water expansion tank? Maybe too small?

I am trying to understand how to determine what size expanion tank you need. It seems that most install the 4.4g size but I see some that have the 8 gallon. Is this determined by size of the system, meaning total water volume? Thank you

Yes total amount of water volume. Both manufacturers' websites have handy sizing charts, and apps
