set the stop on the cutter to the correct length.

Insert the cutter into the gage glass put some light pressure on the gage glass by squeezing the cutter handle. The cutter will score the gage glass from the inside as you spin the glass on the cutter. Put a little pressure on the glass toward the stop so the cutter cuts a straight line.

After you score it hold the glass in both hands and snap it at the score mark.

That particular cutter I have used with mixed results. I would buy a couple of spare gauge glasses.

ware gloves when snapping the glass.

as far as length, slide the glass into the TOP gage glass valve until it bottoms out and cut the length so the bottom of the glass just clears the bottom valve. When installing the glass slide into the top valve and then slide down into the bottom valve all the way.

only tighten the nuts finger tight + if they drip only tighten a little bit

Take the easy route on this. Close both the top and bottom valves above and below the gauge glass, lift the old glass out, remove the nuts, spacers and washers and take it to your local plumbing supply and have them cut a new one to length for you and also buy the spacers and washers. (Brass Nuts too if you think you need them)

@Fred, that will work provided the old glass is the right length. The stuff is a PITA to cut. I have seen better cutters than the above. Can't recall the name right now
