in Strictly Steam
im installing a new peerless steam boiler, put new hoffman 4a quick vents on the mains
but, after i skim the boiler what type hoffman vents should i use on the radiators? i was thinking hoffman 40's , there are 3 @ 50 EDR, 3 @ 35 EDR and 1 @ 20 EDR

    The 4a may be a bit small (0.13cfm) to quickly vent the mains, it might be worth it to use more aggressive venting on the mains. How long is each main and what size pipe?

    #40's in the radiators is probably a good place to start, you may have use faster vents on any radiators that are slow to heat.

    Buy Hoffman 1A's or Vent-Rite #1's for the radiators. They are adjustable and you can adjust for each radiator. As @BobC said, the Hoffman 4a is more than likely way too small for the main(s).

    there are 2- two inch mains 40 ft each

    A big mouth on each of those mains would work nicely.

    I have a pair of Hoffman 4A's.

    They're too slow even for a radiator in my book, forget about using them as a main vent.

    Single pipe quasi-vapor system. Typical operating pressure 0.14 - 0.43 oz. EcoSteam ES-20 Advanced Control for Residential Steam boilers. Rectorseal Steamaster water treatment

    Yes, a Barnes and Jones Bigmouth on each main. You can order them on the Store here on this site.

    I agree on using the B&J Bigmouths, they have about 20X the capacity of the 4A and the rule to remember is you want to vent the mains very fast and the radiators slowly.

    A lot of folks swear by the Hoffnan 40 but it really depends on your system. Because i wasn't sure what I'd need where I bought the Maid O Mist 5L that comes with 5 different orifices - 0.028, 0.10, 0.15, 0.28, and 0.34 cfm.

    Some find they need more adjustability at the low end so they use the VentRite 1A that offer much finer control at the low end ranging from 0.025 through 0.083 cfm. Be careful where you buy these they are sold with a wide range of prices.

    I'd start with the smallest orifice and work my way up in size on radiators you find slow to heat. At this time of year radiators are not going to heat up all the way across so don't be concerned with that.

    Assuming all the pipe sizes are correct and the slopes are good the goal is vent those runs with longer pipe runs and larger radiators faster than smaller radiators on shorter runs. Look at it by figuring out what the volume of air in a feeders pipe and the radiator it serves, larger totals may need faster venting.
