If bigger is better on main vents why don't you always just get the biggest vent?

Excuse me if this is a dumb question, but I've read a few times now how a bigger main vent is always better. Would most people benefit from replacing all main vents with big mouth vents?

Is there such a thing as too much venting of the mains and what are the negatives?

If there is more than one main and one is substantially shorter than the other you want the venting to be proportional so you can get steam to everything at about the same time.
