Brings back my days in the steel and copper industry....rolling mills and pipe mills. It was the physically toughest work I ever did, but I'd go back to it in a minute if I could. The job went to AL, probably to China by now. Try to explain to people now what it was like and words can't describe the heat, effort, or pride. Haven't replaced that feeling for many years. As always, your words come so close to the emotion of the connection to work. Another great piece by the master.....thanks.

I remember the old HB Smith foundry in Westfield, MA. Looked like it was built in the 1800s and went on a tour there in 1971 and it was like going back 100 years in time. You came out of there thinking you didn't want to work in a foundry.....ever. Tough work doesn't come close to describing it.

I toured HB Smith around 92. The picture above is exactly my recollection. Hot!

Dan, I believe you wrote about visiting the Weil-McLain foundry in Michigan City, IN a couple decades ago, same one we visited later as part of Wetstock Chicago. That would make a good companion to this piece- assuming the foundry is still there.

If you still have a copy of "Ye Compleate Workes of Dan Holohan", I think it's in there.
