Stainless vs. Brass in DHW

Could someone please clear some confusion regarding the use of stainless steel in DHW applications? The grade in question here is 304. Is it an acceptable alternative to brass? copper? There is a cost advantage of using SS over lead free brass, but I would like to know the pros and cons.

We use a lot of it, in large part due to the price difference (50% or less of the cost of LF brass around here.) 304SS is good up to about 100 ppm of chlorides -- need 316 or similar above that. Be careful with threaded joints and galling. Need both tape and dope for SS-SS joints IME.0
