Gas Fireplace Question

I'm not sure if this has already been posted before or not. We have a fireplace with a gas line running to it. The gas line strangely is located in the floor of the fireplace towards the center. It was my understanding that this is a no no when installing gas lines. My question is can I us an elbow joint and another pipe to kind of re route the valve closer to the wall of the fireplace and maybe wrap it in a fireproof sleeve to protect it from the proximity of the flames? We want to put an h burner and cover it in fire glass instead of a traditional faux wood burner.
