Finding a Rebuild Kit for a Mouat Steam Trap

I am looking to rebuild some circa 1935 Mouat Steam Traps. Attached is a photo of one of the Traps. Any help on what I need and where to get it would be greatly appreciated.

Either Tunstall or Barnes & Jones would have a kit for that trap. @Sailah is a B&J guy who is on here a lot, if he sees it he could probably tell you which one to use.

if that cover is vertical it looks like the 4017 barnes and jones cage unit. you will need a cover also.

The cover is vertical. What would the part number be for the cover if I went with the 4017 unit?

Slightly off topic, but anyone know what year, and perhaps more importantly, why did Mouat go to this setup? I thought the original vapor/elbow fitting setup was awesome. Any thoughts?

The cover part would be 4017C

After looking at it and talking with my co workers we think it's the 4017. The only other part it could be is the 3465.

We just don't have notes on that trap with no markings and I looked though our old files.

How many of these do you need?

I am going to start with 1 and see if it fits then I would upgrade the rest around 10 more.

    Frank,

Give me a ring at the office and I'll see what I can do about getting you out a sample to try.

For what it's worth - I've used MEPCO trap kits for our big warren webster 78s, Hoffman 55 and 56 f&ts and 17cs. MEPCO website has a ton of good info on part cross-reference, etc. and you can find a local rep via their website. I also found MEPCO more economical than other manufacturers (including tunstal) and the gentleman behind the steamtrapcenter.com uses MEPCO, from what I gathered talking to him. Good luck!

Tom Mouat died in 1928 if i recall correctly. (not that i was there).
Picture this- having to 'dial' in every radiator valve and get the max opening position locked. Labor intensive. Now replace the water seal with a trap. Open inlet valve all you want and walk away. I believe it made the installers job alot easier and made the installer more money using traps over water seals. Just my thoughts to your excellent question.

I still run the original valves and elbows and agree it is a great setup. The water seals allow air to pass quickly until the rad starts condensing filling the cup at which point it slows down letting others catch up (with no moving parts). With the locking high limit valve you can further slow those which would fill too quickly. Tough to beat to get things even simply. But Gerry is right about the time involved - though it is really a one time thing. I wonder if the original plan was to educate the homeowner how to do it. The lock ring is pretty easily changed.

Thanks everyone for the help. The 4017 was a perfect fit. @Sailah do you have a preferred vendor that I buy them from. I am looking for 10 covers and 10 cage units.

I am in Cleveland Ohio. I also picked up a Big Mouth on Amazon it is perfect for my setup since the Gorton #2 is so big I was going to have to make modifications to my drip station to make it fit. I ordered another one last night for my other drip station.
