This week's steamer

I thought I had "before" pics of this one but can't find them now. This is a 3-story house in Baltimore that is split into three apartments. The old boiler was a Dunkirk that had dry-fired- a victim of a plugged McDonnell & Miller #67. It was installed with all the usual errors- undersized copper steam pipe, no header etc. And, when counting the radiation we found it was too small! No wonder the house never heated up all the way, even in the dead of winter.

So we installed this Force 6 steamer. Getting it down the stairs was a tight fit, but the Ferguson delivery crew did their usual excellent job. A drop header, two Gorton #2 main vents, some Vent-Rite #1 adjustable radiator vents, and we turned the house into a sauna on a beautiful fall day.

Not sure why the pics insist on displaying on their side...............

Here is a video of the new sightglass blowdown valve being tested on the new boiler.

One nice thing about this boiler is the manufacturer specs brass sightglass protection rods instead of the usual steel.

We also remounted the gas valve sideways so it wouldn't stick out so far.

@ChrisJ : I think you should capitalize the word "Wrench" and add a "The" in front of it. That Wrench even has its own name!
    But seriously, thank you, sir.

Where did you come to find the force @steamhead and @Gordo?

I was talking to the hydronics guy at our local Ferguson about what boiler brands he could get, and he mentioned it. It is the same as a Crown Bermuda but with a different name. At the time, I was looking for a boiler that had the controls on the right side rather than the left, to comfortably fit in a tight boiler room. Here's the link to that job:

We still prefer power-burner boilers to atmospherics, but can't always go that way.

I only ask because I installed a forced hot water force a few months ago, and that was because the customer had a connection with Ferguson. Decent boiler for sure. Liked the hydrostat on the forced hot water boiler.

In one of the pics I noticed clothespins on a clothes line strung up in the basement. That tells me these folks have not lived with a silver spoon in their mouths. I'm glad they realized while your installation might cost a little more than some it would pay them back with dividends over the years

    Well done!

    Good looking job as always.
In some previous posts there was discussion of an atmospheric burner elevated on blocks, that the burners were designed to have a solid surface below them for correct combustion air.

Do you believe that a valid point? Perhaps the Force has a solid pan under the burners?

It does, so we don't need as many blocks.
