Beckett CG4 or Carlin EZ-Gas in MST288???

Options
Hi guys,
well it's that time of year again for me. Summer projects all finished, time to move onto the boiler. I want to switch to NG for this heating season. Of course, there are no recommended settings for this boiler for either burners appliance guides. Which one would you guys choose for my megasteam? Have a suppliers nearby in Long Island that source both, so it shouldn't be a problem. Noticed the beckett is a couple hundred bucks cheaper.

As of last year, the boiler was oversized. Downfiring the boiler lower than the original spec of the MST288 is something I would want to do to help with short cycling.

I read multiple times of megasteams that had been converted with the carlin burners, but I'm unsure which unit I need, or what recommended band/diffuser/orifice combination this burner needs. I appreciate any help you guys can offer. Thanks.

Call Carlin tech support. I'd bet they already tested a similar set up and can get you initial set up parameters.
But you do need an analyzer and a manometer to do it right. I can usually get the rep for my area to give me this info, and he'll even help you on the phone, or come over if you schedule far enough in advance-and he's in the area.

There was an error rendering this rich post.

    Response from carlin:

"we do not offer a burner for the Megasteam 288 and also we have never tested gas in that boiler."

Burnham doesn't approve that boiler for gas either.

I know they don't approve it, but that doesn't mean it's not done, right? I am looking to convert this thing, regardless of who approves what or not. Just need to know the unofficial (unprinted) recommended equipment/specs. I don't care about warranty either because ownership was transferred to me via house sale.

I'm in the same boat as mookie3333. I have the MST396 that was installed in 2010 before we bought the house. Have since brought NG into the home and are looking at our options. The counter guys at the supply houses say oh you can put a gas gun in but offer no advise other than that.

Burnham doesn't support it (for whatever reason). I learned that it has been done, and successfully. You will need to perform a combustion analysis to fine tune the gas/air mix, and check for carbon monoxide/proper stack temps. Need a dual acting barometric damper. You will also need to verify the condition of the chimney, and/or install a lining (stainless, NOT aluminum).
