Electric steam boiler in an apartment closet

Hey guys, I've just stumbled upon this video where a guy has installed an electric steam boiler in his apartment.... I've never seen anything like it before, not sure if it belongs in Heating Hell or the guy is super smart and knows steam well. He starts to show the boiler operation at 6:10. The video is long but you can just skim through and take a quick look at his setup. What do you guys think?

Comments

  • The introduction to the video is so long, that I was not able to see his work.
I gather from his talk about negative comments, ten years experience, nighttime setback, and not being interested in the comfort of the occupants of the building, that he is rather set in his ways, and not interested in different views on steam.
When he mentions the Heattimer Platinum, 80% cent of which were installed in a misguided effort to compensate for an unbalanced, badly vented system, I realize that he is probably not versed in the venting needs of a steam system.--NBC

He's running that tiny "boiler" between 5 and 7 PSI to heat a tiny apartment.

Single pipe 392sqft system with an EG-40 rated for 325sqft and it's silent and balanced at all times.

I haven't watched this entire video, but apparently according to him high pressure steam moves faster than low pressure. He outlines his test in the first 5 minutes and it's a totally flawed test.

That guy knows just enough to be dangerous.
At one point he says in his video that the banging you hear is a good sign because that means the condensate is getting back to the boiler. :D he also says that the boiler is capable of doing 700-800 EDR and that he had to change from a 3/4" Supply to 1" because he experienced problems :D .
I stopped watching after he was trying to blow the boiler down and was using a 007 to help pump It Out :D
Really funny video if you can stomach watching it.

Let's all try to keep in mind, he may come to this forum and see our comments.

Fact is, people will often learn until they are insulted. Once insulted, or offended you're done, they won't listen to a word you have to say.

  • Thank You for your input. He's rather talkative in his videos. He manages a scotch marine fire tube boiler in an apartment building. He did a review of that too. I was just baffled when I saw that he installed a steam boiler in an apartment and the piping looks nowhere near to what it is supposed to be. He mentioned that boiler was made to provide steam for saunas.

I say put it in Heating Hell and call it a day! On top of all the other misconceptions, towards the end of the video he says you can clean the sight glass out with WD40. Just what you want to do is add an oil based product to a steam boiler.

And all the comments are singing his praises. I agree with Chris insulting people doesn't work (even though I am sure I've done it plenty of times), but some people don't want to hear anything or learn.
This gentleman has seen anecdotal and even incorrect "tests" and is using that as evidence to prove his point. His high pressure low pressure test is completely valid, but he isn't asking the correct question. Sure a reservoir of 2.5 PSI steam will move faster once you build it up then release it all at once (like saying the sky is blue), but the question isn't what will heat that convector quicker it's what will heat the building quicker. So basically his "test" answered a question that no one is asking.

What pressure does the steam "Mini Tube" with the flared copper tubing operate at? I have seen the video but don't recall.

BTW, his boiler was ASME rated, FWIW.
