Homeowner thinks it has been on the roof 30 years! looks like an AET style box.
The header on one end is spun closed on both sides. He claims he can look through the bottom header, no plug in the middle. The open header has been reduced to 3/4 for connection between panels.

    I think a new owner is trying to figure out how they work with the header at one end caped on both sides?

    Looks like a US Solar Corporation collector, which was the precursor to AET. They had the same mounting hardware in the picture as well.
    As to the flow pattern, anyone's guess is as good as mine.
