Underfire Slant/Fin XL-2000

in Oil Heating
Realistically how much can one underfire an xl-2000 without creating a mess and other problems ? Per the nameplate the unit can burn 1gph or 1.15gph.
I presume if I go down to .5gph I am going to have sooting issues and kill my efficiency. What about .8 ? Any advice is appreciated.
