    Russia also has one of the largest district hot water systems but more and more newly constructed buildings are opting out for their own hot water boilers in the basements.

    Klamath Falls, OR, has a district heating system as well. It is direct Geothermal with the high temp Geo water. Through the downtown the sidewalks are above the piping channel which is about 3-4' deep. The heat loss off the pipes warms the sidewalks and melts the snow. Many people in town have wells on their property with a hair pin of pipe that heats their home and hot water. The key to their method is that the geothermal resource has a flow gradient so the water is always moving across the HX's. Klamath Falls has the Oregon Institute of Technology and they have the Geo-Heat Center there.
